Computing

In our ever-evolving world, it's essential that pupils at St Edmund’s are equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

At St Edmund’s, we make use of online programming tools such as Scratch and Audacity. Our wide range of resources allows children to participate in computing projects individually, with a partner, or in small groups. Every classroom is equipped with internet access, enabling both staff and students to efficiently download, update, and share their work.

Pupils learn not only how to use the internet effectively but also how to stay safe online. Online safety is embedded throughout the computing curriculum, reinforced through our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) programme and highlighted annually on ‘Safer Internet Day’. This approach helps children feel confident when using technology and ensures they know what steps to take if they encounter anything inappropriate or unsettling.

The Computing curriculum is built around three core strands: information technology, digital literacy, and computer science.

  • Information technology focuses on using computers for practical tasks, such as collecting and presenting data or conducting online research.
  • Digital literacy teaches students how to use technology safely and responsibly, while understanding its potential for communication and collaboration.
  • Computer science introduces pupils to how computers and networks function. It also offers programming opportunities for all year groups—from using basic floor robots in Years 1 and 2 to designing and creating digital products by Year 6.
